Sir Alex Ferguson feels Roy Hodgson would be an ideal candidate to replace Fabio Capello as England manager. The Manchester United boss has seen Hodgson turn Premier League rivals Fulham from relegation-fodder to European challengers. Ferguson feels that success, coupled with an enviable CV, marks him out as an obvious choice should the Three Lions post become available. The Red Devils boss admits that may not be any time soon, but feels former Switzerland coach Hodgson would excel back in the international arena. "Roy Hodgson has great experience, the kind of experience you need in international management. He would be ideal for that type of thing," said Ferguson, who is set to go head-to-head with the Cottagers at Old Trafford on Sunday. "But I don't think you can pre-empt that. I am sure if Fabio does well at the World Cup, he will want to stay on as England manager. Why would he not want to? It is the hardest challenge for him because the expectation is high and he looks to me to be the type that relishes that."

Sam Allardyce is hoping Peter Crouch will not provide him with another reminder of his talent on Saturday. The Blackburn boss is currently preparing his troops for a tussle with Tottenham at White Hart Lane, and knows his side must beware the ability of Spurs' languid frontman. Crouch has been in fine form for club and country this term and will be looking to help Harry Redklnapp's side take another step towards a top-four finish this weekend. He bagged a brace during the reverse fixture with Rovers in December and Allardyce, who tried to sign the lofty striker during his days at Bolton, admits Blackburn will need to be on their guard if they are to avoid a repeat this time around. "Crouchie is one of my favourites," he said. "I tried to sign him many times and always thought he was much better than people gave him credit for and he has improved as the years have gone on. How many centre-forwards at that height are goalscorers and good centre-forwards, and his England record speaks for itself. There are not many that can match what he does in the Premier League, and it was he who finished us off when we played just before Christmas. We had two chances when I was at Bolton to sign him but didn't come up with the money when we should have - we could have signed him for £2.2million from Aston Villa and that would have been the bargain snatch of the century."

Niall Quinn has assured Sunderland supporters that owner Ellis Short remains fully committed to the club. The Black Cats chairman has revealed that the Texan tycoon continues to allow the North East outfit to operate on a sound financial footing, while sharing the emotions of those who flock to the Stadium of Light every week. Sunderland are about to release their latest figures, which will show a £26million loss, but those numbers simply represent the latest outlay in new talent. Short has also saved the club a £48million shortfall by converting loans into shares, and Quinn is adamant the American has the Black Cats' best interests at heart. He said: "He is Sunderland through and through, his family are. His son goes to school every day in a Sunderland shirt, which isn't an easy thing to do down in London, but that's the difference in our owner. He doesn't want publicity, he is not doing it to be patted on the back by fans. He is doing it because he is in there now, he is one of us. He is hoping there is a very big future here."
