We won when everything went against us, that can only be a good thing. Two great goals by Kane, a top performance from Hendo and a glimmer of how dangerous our young attackers can be.

When everything does click we are going to give someone a very bad day.

Not a bad performance at all really. Never a penalty against us and we could’ve had 2 given to us. Important thing is the 3 points, bring on Panama, win that and we’re through. Biased as a Chelsea fan perhaps but Loftus-Cheek was very bright when he came on. Kane is scoring goals which is all that matters, Sterling, Lingard and Maquire were poor for me but like I say the result is all that matters.

First big upset of the tournament means Germany have a tough job to win their group.

If it panned out would England fans prefer to come second in their group in order to avoid Germany or Brazil in the QFs?

Just watched France v Australia, the playacting from Luis Hernandez was embarrassing as hell.

{Ed001's Note - is Deschamps the French Pardew?}

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jun 2018 13:36:36
That's a bit harsh on Pardew! With such a talented squad you'd expect a more sophisticated gameplan than just throwing yourself to the ground and hoping for a foul.

{Ed001's Note - that does tend to be Griezmann's plan every game.}

First use of VAR, thought it was pretty smooth. The decision was debatable but I can't say giving it was wrong.

16 Jun 2018 13:37:56
VAR has been well used so far, I have to say, much better than the mess during the FA Cup.

Who everyone pick for the world cup? I'm going for Germany

Looks like KSA have a league 2 team at best but for some reason playing with a couple of Sunday League Centre Backs.

Ok, I've gone through all 32 teams and picked out one player to 'watch out for'. Some of them aren't 'unknown' or 'lesser known' at all because frankly I do not have the knowledge of a football hipster, but some of these players were chosen because I expect them to be exciting and ready to shine on the biggest stage or that they'd be interesting to watch in context of the story of how they got to the World Cup. With that being said, I have tried to choose the most obscure option every time I boiled it down to the choice of a few players. Anyway, here goes:

Egypt: Mohamed Salah
Russia: Aleksandr Golovin
Saudi Arabia: Mohammed Al-Sahlawi
Uruguay: Maxi Gomez
Iran: Sadar Azmoun
Morocco: Hakin Ziyech
Portugal: Bruno Fernandes
Spain: Marco Asensio
Australia: Aaron Mooy
Denmark: Pione Sisto
France: Kylian Mbappe
Peru: Paulo Guerrero
Argentina: Cristian Pavon
Croatia: Marcelo Brozovic
Iceland: Albert Gudmundsson
Nigeria: Wilfred Ndidi
Brazil: Neymar
Costa Rica: Joel Campbell
Serbia: Sergej Milinkovic-Savic
Switzerland: Manuel Akanji
Germany: Marco Reus
Mexico: Hirving Lozano
South Korea: Son Heung-min
Sweden: Emil Forsberg
Belgium: Youri Tielemans
England: Trent Alexander-Arnold
Panama: Ricardo Avila
Tunisia: Wahbi Khazri
Colombia: Wílmar Barrios
Japan: Yoshinori Muto
Poland: Piotr Zieliński
Senegal: Sadio Mane

As I said, these aren't exactly obscure players, but please feel free to reply if you're wondering why I chose a certain player and I will explain my reasoning.

Tbh my mate. The majority of those players are quality and well known. There must be others in this squads which will shine this tournament that none of us will have heard of before.

09 Jun 2018 22:01:31
Like who? The nations with better squads are filled with stars with even the rotational players already well-known. The 'lesser known' players from those kinds of squads like Pedro Geromel of Brazil or Benjamin Pavard of France aren't first choice and will, in all honesty, not get a minute on the pitch so it's not as if they can shine. With squads that aren't as good, the quality drop is so large from their star man to their second best player that it makes it difficult to pick anyone else (e. g. Salah for Egypt) .

14 Jun 2018 19:01:47
As with all World Cups the stars to emerge, emerge because prior to the tournament they were unknown.

08 Jun 2018 17:31:51
With the World Cup nearly upon us, just for a bit of craic, you have to pick a team, but only one player allowed per country.

I'll go first
De Gea (gk) Spain
Kimmich (rb) Germany
Godin (cb) Uruguay
Koulibaly (cb) Senegal
Alaba (lb) Switzerland
Modric (cm) Croatia
Kante (cm) France
Eriksen (cm) Denmark
Messi (rf) Argentina
Lewandowski (cf) Poland
Neymar (lf) Brazil.

GK: David De Gea (Spain)
RB: Joshua Kimmich (Germany)
CB: Kalidou Koulibaly (Senegal)
CB: Diego Godin (Uruguay)
LB: Raphael Guerreiro (Portugal)
CM: N'golo Kante (France)
CM: Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium)
CM: Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (Serbia)
AM: Lionel Messi (Argentina)
CF: Mohamed Salah (Egypt)
CF: Roberto Firmino (Brazil)

Also, David Alaba is Austrian, not Swiss.

09 Jun 2018 17:42:46
Ah damn, my bad. I'll replace him with Ghoulam of Algeria. Completely forget about De Bruyne )

09 Jun 2018 20:05:07
Algeria isn't in the World Cup, DoireRed XD.

09 Jun 2018 20:36:20
Here's mine.

Salah - Egypt
Ronaldo portugal
Messi Argentina
De bruyne belgium
Eriksen denmark
Kante France
Koulibaly Senegal
Ramos spain
Marcelo Brazil
Walker england
Navas Costa rica.

Hello ed001, what would be your strongest 11 for England this world cup? Cheers mate.

{Ed001's Note - being perfectly honest, I don't even know who is in the squad mate.}

Well, if we're going to go with Southgate's three at the back, here'd be my pick:

Pickford
Walker Stones Jones

Trent Alexander-Arnold Rose

Henderson Dier

Sterling Alli

Kane.

03 Jun 2018 16:21:06
Hopefully not 2 holding midfielders.

05 Jun 2018 08:39:49
Best? 4-2-3-1

Pope
Walker, Cahill, Jones, Rose
Dier, Henderson
Sterling, Lingard, Rashford
Vardy

Sit deep, and break at explosive pace.

Prediction? 3-3-3-1

Pickford
Walker, Stones, Maguire
Trippier, Dier, Rose
Alli, Sterling, Lingard
Kane

Shambolic and uncoordinated pressing, coupled with flukey passing out from the back that bites us on the backside against good teams.

Hello Eds, didn't really know where to post this so I hope this is the right place.

Are they really going to sell Wembley to Khan? If so, what does that mean for things like cup finals, national team games and so on?

{Ed001's Note - they are certainly considering it, with the deal under the proviso it could still be used for international games and cup finals. Not like they could do the rest of the country a favour or anything and build one where people outside of London could get to it or anything is it?}

I guess, but tradition and all that sentimental rubbish that us English are very good at.

{Ed001's Note - it does seem an odd move.}

24 Mar 2018 07:37:42
Really good result for England, even against a poor Dutch side dominating and getting a win in impressive.

There were a few quibbles, without Kane we looked toothless when the wing backs had the ball in attacking areas. Rashford and Sterling were full of running but lacked composure and we faded hard in the last half hour.

But the positives are what's important, we were solid at the back, the midfield dominated and the forwards looked confident. Bring on Italy.

England have played and beaten the four teams in the semi finals within the last 12 months. Why are we incapable of playing our best football in major competitions : (
