So what can we expect from this year's month in South Africa? Can we look forward to the month long party that was Germany 2006, when even traditional enemies such as English and German fans managed to get along and create a great atmosphere? Or will it be the apocalypse feared by many in one of the world's most violent countries? Will FIFA be able to say 'I told you so' to the many critics of their choice?
Hopefully it will be an exciting and entertaining tournament for all the right reasons, one that will see the world's best players showcase their skills for us all to see.
Can Spain finally end their World Cup hoodoo and go on to win the tournament? Can Africa's first World Cup provide the first African winner? I think it is hard to look past Spain, but very easy to look past the African nations, as eventual winners. January's Cup of African Nations showed up the weakness that is still evident amongst the African teams, and the inconsistency that has plagued them is still there.
England are also unlikely to trouble those manufacturers that promised to give purchasers their money back if they win the tournament. Argentina are being led so incompetently that, if they do by some miracle win it, then it will be in spite of their manager not because of him! Brazil lack a top class striker, Portugal have Ronaldo but little else, and Chile, though the best of the rest, are probably a little too young and inexperienced to go all the way.
Football-rumours predictions:
Winners: Has to be Spain, they just look too strong to be beaten, though if Xavi and Iniesta both miss out then Brazil would (as usual) become the favourites.
Dark Horses: Chile, young and inexperienced, but some good players that are capable of causing some shocks.
Golden Boot Winner: David Villa, enough said. |
